Lavrio is one of the country's major maritime hubs with prominent geophysics and strategic location. It is located 25 km from Athens International Airport and 52 km from the center of Athens with which has a good road link. The future expansion of the Suburban Railway will significantly facilitate the development of the port.

It has been designated as one of the national and international ports with its importance in the wider port system of Attica. The port of Lavrion serves coastal shipping, cruises, commercial activities (RoRo lines), while it has an established fishing shelter and a small yachting port service, mainly for pleasure boats. It has a modern cruise passengers station with full equipment, capable of serving all the requirements of a Home Porting terminal, facilitating the arrival of two cruise vessels simultaneously. The port operates an integrated security system based on an approved "Port Facility Security Plan" that complies with all ISPS security code terms.

The port has the capability of berthing for ships of any size up to 200m in length and up to 8m draft in the commercial section and up to 10m draft for the cruise ships.
