Syros is an island within the Cyclades complex. Its capital is city of Ermoupolis, which is also the administrative center of the Prefecture of Cyclades. It used to be the maritime, industrial and cultural center of the New Greek state.. Cruise guests can tour the city of Ermoupolis and admire the neoclassical and Cycladic architecture. The first contact of the visitors is the City Hall of Ermoupolis, built in 1876, architectural jewel designed by the German architect Chiller. The historic Apollo Theater, is an emblemof Hermoupolis’ cultural heritage, being a miniature of Milan’s ‘’Scala’’ theatre. The church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is distinguished due to the icon of the Assumption of 1562 AC, which was painted by ‘’ El Greco’’. Syros is famous for its culture, which is preserved in the museums, such as the Ermoupolis Archaeological Museum, the Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis, the Ecclesiastical Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art. A monumental symbol of Syros and its great cultural heritage is the Mausoleum of St. George. These are marble tombs and decorated tombstones that survive in the cemetery, and reflect the history and culture of the 19th century. Visitors can climb up to the medieval town of Ano Syros built in 300 AC. The town of ‘’Ano Syros’’ maintains its medieval character and Catholic identity, unfolding through the monks of Jesuits and Capuchins. The Catholic church of the Virgin Mary of Carmel as well as the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of San Giorgio are places of interest. Also, the ‘’ Chalandriani village’’, is one of themost important archaeological site of the island dated back to the 3rd millenniumBC, as well as the ancient city of Galissas, which was first inhabited in the 8th-7th B.C.
